  1. This reminds me of one of my favorite stories in "Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me)." A bicyclist was competing in something similar, and he began to hallucinate. When a vehicle came to pick him up for his break, he was sure he was being abducted by aliens.

    (Ah! In fact, I just grabbed the book to re-read the passage, and the bicyclist had been competing in this very race! That must be why it sounded familiar.)

    The ability to body-hack is a highlight of the article for me, along with the statement "...the risk of mental anguish after giving up far exceeds the risk of permanent physical harm."
