You will not be a science fiction writer in the 1950s. You will not be a Dadaist in the 1920s. You will not be a filmmaker in the 1970s. These groups are shapes and forms of certain times and places & thereafter erased from future chances of repetition & imitation. Your contribution, if it is to come, will be a manifestation of your present. But can he who would escape from his time also serve as its prophet?
But you could be a combination of all three of those things in 2011. The paths are paved--you can make them meet.
ReplyDeleteThe last question is a good one. Reminds me of the old "do the times make the [person], or does the [person] make the times?" I lean toward the times making the person. There are always going to be people who can relate...like others who feel the same desire to escape.
Oo, a science fiction Dadaist filmmaker. I hadn't thought of that. Sounds cool.
